• Citation: The citation of the piece that you are citing is more for future use than current use. Especially since you might not read extant pieces, providing a citation can come in handy. Also, I often will paste these citations in the work cited of research I am doing (so I don’t have to re-write it each time). The accuracy of this citation is up to you, but I would encourage providing the same kind of citation that you would use in a works cited page.
  • Summary: Give the overall point of the reading in your own words. Then find the sub-points that support the main claim. Point to a few passages that are pivotal to understanding the reading. This section should only be 3-4 sentences long (1 paragraph, maximum).
  • Response: This is your contribution to the ideas of the reading. What do you think? Why do you think the way you do? Point to parts of the reading you find especially important to your way of thinking (1-2 paragraphs).
  • Connections/Questions: How does this reading relate to any of the assigned material prior to this? How does it connect to your experience? What questions does the reading generate? (1-2 paragraphs)
